cutting mat, rotary cutter and I use my 24 in ruler (with a hand grip) for 90% of my cuts

sorry about the storm destroying things. As for fabric, do you or friends or neighbors have any out of style dresses, shirts. Even if they have stains you can either cut around the stains or leave one or two in for "character". Outgrown childrens clothes that can no longer be handed-down? My first quilt was a baby quilt for my oldest - almost 40 years ago and I did I think 10 inch blocks then embroidered animals and his birth infor on it.

I think I read on Leah Day's blog that she is checking out sewing machines that are less than $500. You might want to check that out.

Check local Goodwill and such. Sometimes they have fabric. Look on web for free patterns. Ask here with questions. Someone usually has an answer. Welcome from central Illinois and happy quilting.

save all your scraps. Check out your local library for quilt magazines to borrow. borrow a camera to take pictures when you are done so you can post it for all to see. Happy quilting. welcome from Conroe Texas.
