I'm with you on this. The quilt did win first, but when the gray was described as "an interesting choice", it was probably the quilting and piecing that elevated this quilt to winner status, not the colors. There will always be some out there who have to take everything to a "different level" just because they can. Fortunately in our quilting world there's room for everyone.

I'm currently making a quilt for my granddaughter's dorm room which is on the chilly side. She requested pink and gray so I have several pieces of each in prints with a couple of solids. Just a bit of white added in, and I want to keep it myself because the pink and gray are so pretty together. Looks so soft and cozy in flannel.

This is a fun discussion. Snooze, your comment made me giggle - yes, according to popular romance there are at least Fifty Shades of Gray! I am not crazy about the color either, though someone gave me a couple of pieces, so I made a fall pumpkin quilt out of one. Last year a relative wanted pink and gray chevron, so I made it, but not my taste. As with many things, some day it will go out of fashion and we'll all cringe when we remember the gray craze of the twenty-teens. I feel the same way about stainless steel appliances.

I've always liked the color grey (and not because my last name is Gray). There is so much that goes with it.

Thank you, quiltin-nannie, for your comment, which made me go back and find the zoom feature--that quilting IS gorgeous, and I would have missed it!

I like the grays. Just not in my hair.

I like clear, clean, colors! "greyed" colors are hard for me to see.. I found an article about color blindness that explained why all my art was turning out grey and muddy... I could not believe what it told me until I had my daughter and husband take the test also and they could see what I could not..when I went for an eye check up my eye Dr. confirmed it was true..the more pure the color dyes are the better I like them..grey can make me feel confused, etc. I like gray if it is made by complimentary colors and put beside a dominate color it is made with.. Colors can make a person sick, weak, etc. if they are wrong for the person.. I learned from a blind artist that colors have different feel to them when you touch them..really interesting study!! I think that is why when we feel colors of fabric some feel so good and others do not.. (my 2cents worth)
Boy do I wish I could do quilting like that!!

To me gray is a classic much like black, with gray being less cold or harsh. I find white crisp.

A beautiful amethyst looks striking along with the correct gray. White is too much. A slate teal is complimented aside a nice gray. I was worn out with navy and most blues growing up but when my daughter paired navy, a silvery blue, white and a calm gray I ate my words. Better Homes and Gardens had a paint display that we painted my daughters house. You have to look to see is that gray or is that taupe. Then every room changes with a guest bath in a soft victorian pink, soft white and the deep green from moss. Breakfast room starch white cafe curtains with turquoise & a hint of lime green. That navy in the living room, dining room something else. Master is amethyst and a bit darker gray that is comfortable to a female and male room. But gray anchors the entire house.

Isn't it funny as quilters what we look at for color inspiration? And our take on colors? Yellow is my enemy, unless it's so buttery that I don't see it glaring at me any longer!
