My thanks to everyone for some great ideas. I have a coupon for Bed, Bath and Beyond so I am going to try the bed risers - it that doesn't do the trick them we will move on to the PVC pipe. You guys are a great help!!

I started out using the breakfast bar because it is even higher than my kitchen counters. But now I have a huge table that sits above the guest daybed (my sewing room doubles as a guest room). I bought a large cutting mat at Joanne's that covers the majority of the table, then a smaller mat that covers the rest. I love it!

The bed risers work perfectly. We use them on our cutting table at church where we do our prayer quilts. I use my dining room table for cutting at home, with a mat
    of course.

This works . I used for my table. You can raise any hight you want. And it's a lot cheaper. They'll cut them at the lumber yard.

interesting variety of cutting places. mine is the top of the dryer. i am tall and it works fine, the cutting matt stays there. my sewing table is a large laminated door ?? well it has a hole in one end, maybe it was a computer table, 10$ at the 'restore' place. i clear it off when i want to layer and baste a quilt (i save them up and do a few at a time_)
we raise this table with pvc pipes and it is perfect.
