This was truly a scrap quilt... I dug through all my scraps and cut anything bigger than 2". I didn't cut any of the pieces from yardage. I did use some strips from FQ. My main concern was to find as many different fabrics as I could without obsessing about duplicates. And if my scraps were large enough than I did cut strips. And I also received both some 2" squares and scraps from others. I threw the darker squares in one box and the lighter in another. When I started having trouble finding a light to match up with a dark, I'd cut more lights and vice versa. I could not force myself to be totally random. There had to be some pleasing relationship between the two. I couldn't cut for too long or I would get careless. So it was rounds of cut some, sew some, then cut some more.

Some strip cutting. But a lot was from scrap pieces bigger than 2". I didn't cut anything from yardage. Some from FQ. I was given some scraps and some 2" squares. I just kept cutting and collecting over the 2 years. Little gremlins get in my scrap boxes though. I think I have as many scraps as when I started. LOL!

Quilt as you go --- I sandwiched each 64 block square and did the cross hatch quilting on my regular sewing machine. This quilt would have been too large for my machine -- also too big for my HandiQuilter frame. My method for putting the completed squares might be a little unorthodox but the finished product looks ok. I squared the quilted block and abutted two together and did a wide zig zag to hold them together. Then I added the narrow black sashing stitching by machine on each side which further stabilized the joined blocks. The wider black sashing on the back was sewn by hand so that the stitches wouldn't show on the front. I know (now) that there is a better way. But that is one of the things I love about quilting... you learn more with each quilt you make.

That is so very pretty! You did a great job and I'm sure she'll treasure it for many years.

Okay, I'll take it! Joking, of course! Know she will be over joyed! Nostalgia in the quilt!

Very nice, I can see why you would want to keep it.
