Piper, thank you! This is what I am going to do, find a quilting ministry and donate most of my fabric to them. Such a simple solution to an over abundance of fabric. It's at the point where I don't even want to walk into my sewing room.

I have found over the years that my fabric choices have changed. I mainly prefer hand dyes or Batiks now. I typically don't buy what I call "printy" prints. I know that these are getting to be real popular now, especially those with lots of white in them. For the last couple of years, I've been trying to only shop in my stash. This for a several reasons: to save money, to use up what I have and it might force me to be a bit creative to get what I want. I might over-dye or paint a fabric if it's not just right. So far, I've been doing pretty good and have only bought the equivalent of a couple yards of fabric in 2 years.

I agree with Terri D......your "stash" is not really YOUR stash. However, if you ever do a Sunbonnet Sue, you would want all your little ladies dressed in different patterns, thus saving you money on new purchases; or in my case, I would use the extra fabrics in Ohio Stars for a varied look. But I also use donated fabrics for extra borders when I need to enhance the size.....I take old quilt tops and make them into functional pieces but I've found they are usually smaller than what we're making today. Be creative and use what you have or pass the fabric on to someone else. I promise...if there is a quilter's guild in your area, they would readily accept whatever you have. Best to you!

my fabric collection is largely made up of leftovers from other projects. i have made three scrap quilts and am at a point where i am just really tired of using the same fabrics.

no matter how varied the patterns, if i keep using the same fabric my quilts are going to start to look the same!

i have 4 full sets of yardage for 4 different quilts waiting for me. but first...i have to finish quilting the 5 sandwiches that are patiently biding time down there!

Here is what you can do with your stash! Visit the website below. Bonnie Hunter has numerous free patterns on her site for scrappy quilts:

    Have fun!

Most of what I consider my stash was purchased as remnants or on super red-tag clearance from JoAnns. I use it for scrap quilts and for filling in when I need a little more variety in a quilt. Because it was purchased at greatly discounted prices, I don't feel guilty for having this fabric on hand. I should note that all of my fabric stash fits in one 4 drawer dresser. That being said, I am not actively adding to my stash, because I'm not using it as quickly as when I first started quilting. I also find that I often want to make a quilt with the newest line from my favorite fabric designers, and not from the stash I have been gathering for the last 4 years.
I can also see that if my stash were inherited from others, it would be even less appealing to me. If you want to donate it, just to have less clutter in your life, I'd say 'go for it'.

My stash is also good for petting, fondling, folding, dreaming on. And it's cheaper than therapy.

I think of it like shoes. Do I really need more than one pair? No, but I have about 20! Wouldn't want to part with any of them anymore than I want to reduce my stash!

I've been working mostly out of my stash for a few years now. Although to look at my sewing room you'd never know it. LOL I can do entire projects from it without buying anything so IDK. I do have it organized by color with yardage hanging in the closet which makes it easier to find what I need.
