    I cut away from myself. Allows me good control of pressure and accuracy. I'm just concerned about safety. I use an acu-cut ruler and it saves on fingers!

    from my body outward. I find the Martelli cutter easier to use than others though. I have way more control over my cutting. no affiliation with the company, just a satisfied customer.
