How do you build your stash?
#81
I love this question. My answer is simple ~ I build my stash one piece at a time. LOL Actually, I have my fabric categorized by color. Batiks and specialty fabrics including ones I've dyed or surface designed are separate. I keep most of it visible and can tell at a glance the colors I am low in. I rarely buy anything full price. I'm a patient shopper, will wait for sales or make do with what I have. My stash has increased greatly from relocating/downsizing friends and garage sales.

Since 1997 I have bought fabric. If I like it & can afford it, I buy it. When a Shop is having a Sale, I go shop & buy what I like, not knowing what it will be used for & when. When it gets to looking like I have too many blues, or purples or pinks, I steer away & go for other colors I am short on. When buying for a specific quilt, if I like the fabrics, I do try to get extra for my stash.

Um, I rarely ever have a project in mind and I have a substancial stach.

I buy 1)first when I see a good sale
2) when a fabric just absolutely calls to me, ie. soft blue/gray colors
3) when I need additional fabrics to make a project
I find that when I buy colors that really appeal to me, they usually find a home in my projects.
Hit a end of the bolt sale today; 40% off is you finished all the fabric on the bolt. 8 1/2 yds for $56 inc. tax, 5 yards of which were a gorgeous blue gray batik. The other was a green marble which will go in any Christmas quilts. It's hard to find good greens.

I do the same thing, If I see some fabric I like that is on sale I buy 2 or 3 yards thinking I will use it some time or another. Also when starting a quilt I always buy more that what the pattern calls for, especially if there is one of the fabrics I like I will buy at least 1 extra yard.

My problem is when I am in a shop I buy at least a fat quarter, it
has to make it worth the trip. I can't just go home and say oh I didn't get anything. But, I just pick up something that
I love and have no plan for it, but will some day. It is a sickness!
Beware!
