I want to make a 20 inch square cushion, and I think I want to make it just one log cabin block.

I have been sketching a bit but I cannot decide if it is better to scale up a block and have fatter strips, or to go for it and have lots and lots of 2 inch strips, meaning there are lots of "rounds".

If I go for many "rounds", would that affect the optimum size of the centre square?

I know "anything goes", but I'd like to know if anyone has a firm view on what would work best in terms of proportion, I'd love to hear it!.

my thinking is that larger strips will look more contemporary while the more narrow stips would look more like antique quilts?

That's a question I've never thought to ask.

But as for keeping it all in equal sizes, I'd say if you enlarge the stripes, then enlarge the center square also. But on the other hand, as has been stated here often, it's YOUR quilt and you can do anything you want with it. And often you'll discover that it looks marvelous when you change things around.

It's like a recipe, add this and that, but if you add something different, it will take it from everyday foods to GOURMET!!

So go for it, and show us what happened when you did. We're all interested.

If you search log cabin pillow through Google Image you will find lots of
photos and this might help you decide which style you'd like best.
I think it would also depend on what type of prints you're using...big prints
or small prints. But it's your pillow...so your choice.

Well, to add to your confusion: You could make four 10 1/2" blocks. That would look more country.
So, it just depends on what your personal style is.
Be sure and post a pic when you get it done. We would love to see it!

... and it would allow you to place them to create a design with the four log cabins!

Another possibility .... if you had a piece of fabric you wanted to focus on (ie a picture, a flower), you could use it as the centre (eg. 6" square) and then build your logs around it.

IMHO smaller logs, are always nicer and help show off your work more.

As mentioned, the fabric you are using might help determine what your better size to use is.

And yes, as you said, anything goes ... there are no rules!
What is right for you is the right way to do it!

I like the idea of the 4 smaller blocks. It would seem not to give a "bulls-eye" image.

While you agonize over what to do, you could have made 4 different blocks and enjoyed them all. Variety...
