This is my favorite form of applique. Prefer this method over any other. Always have a project on the side going on.

I love, love, love to do needle turn. At the moment I am mid way through a Hawaiian Quilt, all needleturn. As I designed it myself, it is more detailed than 'real' Hawaiian, so miles and miles of turned edges.
I don't think it is dying out as much as it was ever as popular as piecing. It always seems to me that I am the only one doing it when I am in a group.
My first quilt, in 1970, was needleturned applique. I did not know what I was doing, I thought I was inventing something new as the only quilts I had ever seen were pieced.

I love doing needle turn and so does my sister. She is nuts abut it. I love doing it but haven't been able to lately. You will love it.

I tried all the different techniques for hand applique and needle turn is the one for me. It's so relaxing, portable, and I don't have to do a lot of prep work before hand. I use straw needles and silk thread.

Not a dying art in my area, our LQS has class and a wonderful teacher who only does needle turn quilts and hand quilts all her quilts.I am still working on my very first hand applique quilt, hand quilting it now, it has been almost 2 years now and I hope to finish it before the year ends!

The applique pieces are sewn onto the quilt top or blocks by hand. Tiny stitches, turning under small amounts of the applique pieces as you go :D:D:D
I thought this was the definition of needle turn applique but wasn't positive. Thank you amma for such a good description.

I just learned to do needle turn applique a month ago, and I really like it! I do machine applique too, but this is a different look. It is a different kind of relaxation.

I still do needle turn applique. I am not as good as I want to be and hopefully not as good as I will be someday, if I keep trying. I really don't think it is dying out. Sometimes people just dont' have the time it takes to do needle turn applique.

I have only been quilting for about 2 1/2 years and there are so many skills that I want to learn. I take classes as often as I can. If I could spend the time quilting that I would like, I would be able to needle-turn applique now. But, alas, learning it remains on my "to-do" list. :)
