I see it as one block. I have no idea what it's called.

I found something similar in BlockBase called "Chain of Diamonds" by Aunt Martha

I would definitely prefer to piece the first version - the one with a 16-patch in the center. All these y-seams give me the hives just looking at them! :D

Quilter's Cache has a partially paper-pieced pattern for the Aunt Martha version - she calls it Diamond Chain.

Even with paper piecing, I think I would prefer the first version, as shown in the original vintage quilt. I sure do admire the original quiltmaker, no matter which method she used. It's really beautiful!

Feel free. I would make it as an 8-inch block, each small square being 1 inch. Or you could make them 1.5" each, resulting in a 12-inch block.

I think someone made this up themselves...even looked in the Brackman book and nothing shows up in this combo!
