Even with paper piecing, I think I would prefer the first version, as shown in the original vintage quilt. I sure do admire the original quiltmaker, no matter which method she used. It's really beautiful!
I prefer the first version too...looks really great and a wonderful way to use up scraps OR if you are in the 1.5" stamp swap...hehehe

I saved the picture. opened it in kodak easyshare software, made it black and white, resaved, opened in paint and enlarged 250% then used red lines to draw the squares :) I don't have any quilting software so I just take the scenic route!

Feel free. I would make it as an 8-inch block, each small square being 1 inch. Or you could make them 1.5" each, resulting in a 12-inch block.
