Why not do a bedrunner. I think they are so cool. No huge commitment... of course you would have to know what the individual has on his/her bed.

I find most of the great deals through EBates. It's free to sign up and there are many one time only deals on Facebook when you Like a business. All the big quilt shops are on Facebook and all the well known quilters who design patterns and write books. There is always a give away and great deals for their Facebook Friends. I got a tower of fat quarters from Marcus Bros Fabric for free from a random selection on their Facebook page. I have won three quilting books this year from give a ways. I figure I pay for internet so why not use it to pay me back.

In a recent Connecting Threads of Keepsake Quilting magazine I noticed
little bags (9 x 12") with drawstring at top, to use for giving bottles of wine, or??
It appears you would use your "orphan" blocks and other scrappy prints
to make them. Very cute!

For the guys, a suggestions would be roll-up-tool bags, tool caddy's, small duffel bags. I have found tute on line for all these.

This is totally away from quilting, but I am going to give a few gift certificates from www.kiva.org. This is an organization that co-ordinates micro loans to people in third world countries. A minimum loan is $25 US plus about $3 handling. You choose who you wish to lend to, and get regular updates on the loan's repayment. I 'invested $60 about 3 years ago. To date I have helped 5 different people, relending as monies are paid back. It makes me feel good.

The girls are getting zippered makeup bags with a tissue cozie, small zippered bag and a humbug inside. The guys are getting zippered ditty bags. I will probably also make a christmas ornament for each. With 4 kids (plus 1 unoffically adopted 20 yrs ago), spouses and 8 grandchildren I have already started working on them.
