This is about 9" by 12". The background squares are 1". They are machine pieced. The centerpiece is a hand appliqued butterfly from my G'ma Drake, which is about 50 years old -- she died when I was in my early teens. I trimmed down the muslin square that she had used, then hand appliqued the muslin onto the pieced background. I hand quilted diagonally across the squares.

Then, because the butterfly was already puffing out, I made a slit in the backing and stuffed it some. That is why the quilt pulls in a little at the sides -- I added the stuffing only after everything else was done. I am going to try to block this out to more square, but I could not wait to show you how cute this is!

I have several other butterflies that G'ma made -- I'll stuff them first, from now on!

G'ma Drake's butterfly -- now in a little quilt

Your Grandma would be very pleased with the mini quilts you are making from the butterfly appliques. Very cute idea.

That's so cute! That's great you got to use something of your grandma's.
