I am going to try to monogram using a zig zag stitch and an embroidery hoop....any suggestions before I start?

Use a stabilizer, even freezer paper if you don't have any. What is the fabric your sewing on? calla

Some nappy fabrics do better if you place a layer of light, washaway stabilizer on the top.

Make sure you use a stabilizer on the back too.
The lighter weight the fabric, the heavier the stabilizer :D:D:D

I got a great book on this topic called:

Calligraphy with Thread: using a zigzag stitch and a regular sewing machine by Nancy Kazlauckas

I haven't tried it yet but I read the book cover to cover and it is well written and explains everything.
