I use paperbackswap.com.... also free. When someone sends me a book it only costs '1 credit' , when someone requests a book that I have listed I pay the postage to mail it.

Because paperback books or hardbound books all 'cost' the same 1 credit, I generally only request hardbound books.

I've used swaptree successfully several times, but have stopped until they change their policies about "all books/cds/etc are the same." I don't think it's fair to send my unopened book to someone and get some beat up thing in return.

Sometimes all I want is to read a book once and give it away when I'm done. In that case, any condition book is fine. Sometimes, though, I want a specific book because I'm collecting that author's works. In that case, I want a book in as 'near new' condition as I can get -- and will happily trade a 'near new' book of my own. The way it works now, swaptree won't let you do that.

Those of you who have used swaptree [or other swap services] before: what are your thoughts on this?

This may be a carry over from another thread, but I love books on CD -- for listening to on the train to/from work [while I knit!], while I'm walking, when I'm sewing, etc.

I'm lucky in that I have FOUR public library systems all within an easy walk of BART [one of our local public transit systems]. Sometimes I get on a kick and want to listen to everything an author has written and will go to each of these libraries to get my 'fix.' Nora Roberts and Alexander McCall Smith come to mind -- wonderful books and fabulous "readers."

I feel so virtuous and productive when I listen, since I get to "read" [one of my very favorite occupations] and do something else at the same time!

When swapping with those services can you request a specific author? I collect books by Nora Roberts, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, VC Andrews, and a few others. My goal is to collect every book by Nora Roberts and Stephen King. So, when I get those, they stay! LOL! Unless, of course, I get a duplicate.

I can suggest that you check out paperbackswap.com. I've belonged for 2 years and don't remember policies, and they may have changed. I do know that they say books have to be in good condition with no writing and no missing covers. You can request that a book come from a smoke free or pet free environment.

So far all the books I've gotten have been hardbound, my choice. And most have been like new. Seems that others also read a book once and then trade it at paperbackswap.com

The library is a great place to get books also, but sometimes my library system does not have a book available. Just today I tried to get Annette Ornelas' book Peeled-Back Patchwork Curves Without Piecing but it isn't in the system, maybe it is too new.

These are great resources. I will definitely check them out. I have been doing business with 3 used paperback stores that give me credit for trades and sell at half price. They don't take hardcovers though. Then, in the summer, I take some to 2 more shops on the coast. I get my paperbacks really cheaply that way. However, I do have several Books on Tape (cassettes) if anyone is interested. Also, I have quite a few hardcovers so I will check out those sites. Thanks!

OK, I joined paperbackswap.com and they have already requested two of the three books I listed! WoW! I have sold through Amazon and Barnes and Noble also. They were a good deal but you pay dearly in shipping costs.
