I recently started my newest project. A dear friend has a daughter my ds's age and her poor quilt has seen better days. It's probably as old as I am or older, but she picked it up in a Goodwill 6 years ago and it's finally falling apart.

The original 9 patches are a weird poly/cotton knit combo. I think I had clothes made of this funky stuff. Some of the seams are still intact and some are definitely not. The sashing material is what fell apart first. You can't really tell in the pic, but some of the sashing material is completely destroyed. The binding is a purple satin and the back feels like a regular cotton sheet.

Here it is:

So she asked me to fix it. It ended up being easier to just recreate the little girl a new quilt. That way, if she doesn't like the "feel" of it, as she rubs her hands on the blocks and binding to sleep...then she can still have her other one. This one actually has prints for some of the pieces so it'll grow with her. Here are my 9 blocks. All of them are made with apholstery fabric. I washed, dried and pressed twice since the first time around some shrank more that I thought they would and the pieces weren't big enough. All these little squares are 3 1/2". While it's not the first time I've used this type material, it is the first time I've dealt with squares this small. We got identical sheeting for the sashing. Then, sheet feeling material with horses on it for the back and the same purple satin for binding. Will post final pics when done, but here are the blocks I put together today:

how nice of you to do that for the little girl. I am sure she will love it and you for doing it for her. It will be her very own and she will still have the old one too. You are a sweetie :D

really like your blocks, melissa. so varied and colorful. lucky little girl, two quilts. I know how attached some children are to their blankies or 'pets' when it's nap time. So kind of you, and I bet mom is grateful too. :D

Very nice! And will last much longer than trying to "repair" the one that was falling apart....

Finished the top the day before yesterday. Got the sandwich basted, tie tacked and bound. The quilt was finished last night before J's bedtime, so I got to present it to her. I have never seen her so happy. I got a spontaneous hug and lots of thank yous.

When I get the pics emailed to me, I'll post them. I really love how it turned out.
