Default newbie from alabama

Hi everyone,

I am a 45 yrs old female that up to 6 wks ago had no idea how to sew anything. I have recently started taking lessons from a wonderful lady and have made a civil war outfit (dh and myself does something with a historical cemetery in the fall) anyway I have always admired quilts I think I can follow some of the directions on making the blocks but where and how do you learn to hand quilt it? And can you do the stiching with a basic brother sewing machine?

Thanks

Yes, you can stitch with a basic brother sewing machine, no problem at all. You can go to Youtube and type in "hand quilting" and go from there. It will keep you plenty busy. Many gals here sew on sewing machines from when they first came out.

Welcome, from TX!

You can do the basic stitching with any type of machine. Enjoy!

Hi, I am also a newbie from Alabama. I started learning about 2 or 3 months ago. So far I have only made one table runner, a small quilt-as-you-go baby quilt and some outfits for my grand daughters. but I am currently working on my first twin size quilt. I have no idea what I am doing really, but certainly enjoying it when I can find time to sew. Welcome, this board is a wealth of information you will love it.

Default Welcome to the forum!

Welcome! I, too am from AL, the Dothan area, and started quilting about 3 years ago...I sew better than I quilt! I just couldn't understand why any sane person would cut up a perfectly good piece of fabric, just to sew it back together again!
But I am hooked. A neigbor's husband got me started, I love the design process, but don't follow complicated patterns very well. I prefer larger pieces, I sort of do my own thing, and I give most of them away. My first quilts were 3 identical "princess" bed-size quilts for grand daughters, embroidered squares and sashings. I have evolved a bit, but still do basics better than things like drunkard's path. I just get bored trying to get the hang of it and would rather just whip out something I am more comfortable with. Join a guild if you can find one, (ask at fabric stores/quilt shops) and you will learn a wealth of information there. I love my guild meetings! I have recruited a few newbies as well.
Have fun, Linda

Welcome to this great board, you can get any question answered here. Quilting does not requaire an expensive sewingmachine, most piecing is straight stitch.
