I have a friend that I have known for over 10 years. She has a Bernina 1630 Plus for sale. It has the quilting table, walking foot and several other feet besides what it came with. She is just a casual sewer. she has only made one baby quilt with it. The rest of her sewing has been mending and button holes.She inherited her mothers singer and does not need two machines. She is selling it for $600.00. Do you think this is a good buy? I have always wanted a Bernina. I will take it for a test drive next weekend. I would love any feedback I could get on this. Check with your local dealer to see what they would sell one for. Sounds like a great way to get a Bernina!! Maybe she would let you take it to the dealer to see if there are any issues with it. I love my Bernina - I know I'm a machine snob but nothing sews like a Bernina.

A new Bernina walking foot alone costs $175. This sounds like a great buy. I had a 1630 but had to sell it when hubs was laid off. :-( The 1630 has a wider 9mm stitch width vs. the 5 mm width of the other machines in this series (1080, 1130, 1230, 1260, and 1530). I would get it in a heartbeat.

I agree with Laura.

This model was made in the early 1990s (I think) and has the earlier "embroidery options....meaning an alphabet or two and many decorative stitches. I'd adore to have one!

I would check around for prices but I used to sell Bernina back in the 1990's. Personally I think that is an exceptional deal!

Thank you for your input. I am excited to try it out. I do not do a lot of embroidery. I was wanting a machine for back up, but have a feeling it will be my main piecing machine. I have a Juiki that I do all my FMQ on. I do want to give this one a try to see how it free motion quilts too.

1630 is an old machine and had a lot of problems.

Don't let the fact that is is an older machine discourage you. My 930 is my favorite of all my Berninas. It is a workhorse. I am not familiar with your machine. Check around and find people that have that machine and talk to them. Have they had problems? Why is she selling the machine? Do your research. It is a Bernina, The older ones are like a John Deere tracker, with a little tune up and service they just keep running. Check on e bay. My dealer checks there when he is taking in a trade for price ideas.

I would get it. I have a 1530 that was given to me in so-so shape (a friend inherited it and doesn't sew). I have invested about $600.00 in it. I had to buy some feet, it only came with one foot, and I had to have the mother board replaced. My 1530 is a gem, she does everything I ask of her. Love my Bernina 1530.
