What size do you cut your squares for a 10 minute block? I'm sure it varies, but I'd like to hear what size you've seen or used that worked out well. I'm thinking of using various B/Ws with red centers.

Depends on the size of the initial square sizes. 5" squares would be 9". 10" square 19". It is the same rule as putting 4 squares together ignoring the fifth square which fit in the seams.

I've used precut Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, those 2 separately and together in a quilt, my own squares cut for whatever size quilt and visual effect I'm interested in. Lots of options for a 10 minute block - I think it's pretty fun to determine the size for each of these Good Luck and do share what you come up with!

I've done a few "practice" blocks using 5" squares, but I wouldn't go any smaller personally.

I like 6" squares -- makes cutting them quick using the 6 x 24 ruler.

The middle square could be any size, it won't change the size of the block.

I did a sample last year with a charm pack and thought 5" was a little small. Maybe 6" or 6 1/2" would work.

BellaBoo, that's good to know. I could do the center a little larger if I want more red to show.

Block size (the pieced block) is also dependent on quilt sized needed....if you need a specific finished size, then you have to adjust to fit. I have used the 10" squares with great success as the pieces are bigger and easier to handle. Block size can also be dependent on if you are cutting from a FQ or yardage...you need to adjust to get the most squares and little waste.

I used a layer cake to make mine and liked the size they came out to be. Nice and large. Made a beautiful quilt.
