I am going to order one of these this afternoon and I was wondering what size to get. The rag quilts I have made were 4 inch but can't seem to visualize the 8. 5 size. I believe it will finish at 7 inches or so. If anyone has used the die, I would appreciate your opinion. The ones I have made were from flannel as the top and back with no batting. I like the warmth of the light weight quilt. I guess my concern is will the larger square be to "floppy" (for lack of better word. Lol)

I had been looking into that, too, and here's what I found on the Accuquilt site for the 8.5: rag die:

Cut Size 8 1/2"W x 8 1/2"H (22 cm x 22 cm) rag square with 3/4"L x 1/4"W (2 cm x 1 cm) fringe
Finished Size 6 1/2"W x 6 1/2"H (17 cm x 17 cm) rag square

I made a rag quilt using the larger rag die. I used a layer of cotton and two different colors of flannel. I didn't sew the "X" in the middle. The square ends up measuring 6.5" with 1" fringe on each side. I don't consider it "floppy" but it is a great quilt to wrap up in. I think just 2 layers of flannel would be too floppy, JMHO.

The 8 1/2 inch one was perfect. The 5 inch too small...and the 12 inch was too big - you lose a lot of the square after sewing it.

My sizzix die is 8" unfinished, 6" finished. That's a good size to put applique on too. I tried to insert a picture using the little insert box in tab line, but I couldn't get it on. How do you attach a picture? A message came up directing me to my computer and I went and found the file (jpg) but couldn't get it to come up. Thanks

I absolutely love mine and would never make a rag quilt without it. As a matter of fact I just finished (well almost) tons of flannel to make some. I normally make blocks ahead of time and the when I need a quick gift I go thru my blocks and pick out the ones that match the person its for and sew the seams together and I'm done. I do flannel front and back and I use light batting in the middle but that's optional and some use 3 thicknesses instead of batting. I sometimes applique designs on the back of the quilt to make it reversible. The ones that I'm getting ready to make are going to have the centers embroidered on the machine for my newest DGD and the one due in 4 weeks. When I bougth mine there was only one size, the 8.5 and I can't imagine without it and it gives you more room to personalize it with designs or sayings. My grandson's for kindergarden had his name, yr and school name on it. Its a keepsake. I'd never make one if I had to use scissors.

I use the smaller rag die for baby quilts, and the larger one for lap quilts and bigger. If I could only have one, I would probably pick the smaller one just because you can make a really quick baby quilt when needed.

I have both dies and use the 8 1/2" die the most. Hint: you do not have to remove all the threads in the die, just leave them, the threads will build up enough to be easy to pull out a lot at one time. The threads do not hinder the blade at all.
