My DH's mother taught him how to sew. He often had to help maintain it. Found out the other day my cousin's husband who also was Navy had to learn how to use one. They were told since their mother was in the Navy they were going to have to learn to sew or quit tearing up their clothes. Love the photo.

Is it difficult to turn a hand crank and guide the material at the same time? I could probably learn to use a treadle but hand crank seems to odd.

That sailor is from one of the UK Royal Navies. You can see H. M. on his hat. I wonder which ship and when it was taken.

Nope, it's actually quite easy. I built mine from scraps so to speak and it works very well.
