That is horrible. I try not to use plastic bags but our grocery store offers nothing else. I bring my tote bags to use but sometimes buy more than they can hold. :oops: :oops: After reading this I will redouble my efforts to live greener.

birds feed their young bottle caps and other plastic chards, unknowingly filling their stomachs to the point that they die of starvation.
Seabird parents capture prey at sea and bring it back to their chicks. We study chick diets according to how each species feeds its young. Puffins, pigeon guillemots, common murres, and murrelets carry whole fish (or sometimes squid), in their bills to their chicks. We crouch in hidden blinds and watch the adult birds as they fly back to the colony to feed their chicks. With binoculars we can identify the fish they carry and get an estimate of its length in relation to the length of the bird’s bill. Kittiwakes and gulls feed their chicks differently. They swallow whole fish for their chicks at sea. When they return to the colony, they regurgitate this food for their chicks. We collect some of these regurgitations and analyze their contents to learn about their chick diets.

This is horrible!! I will definatly start reusing more things! Our family already recycles paper, plastic, cans, and cardboard. We also use the tote bags when we go shopping, and we also grab like 2 boxes for the food that doesn't fit. Then we break down the cardboard and recycle it. :D

Ireland put a tax on plastic bags several years ago now. They are still available to buy in the supermarkets, but very rarely do I see anyone doing so. We are so used to taking our own bags now for the shopping, and a lot of shops have gone back to offering paper carry bags.
There was a lady in the UK who hit on the idea of importing bags made in the east, that read 'I am not a plastic bag'. The idea took off, big time, and they were eventually changing hands on ebay for a lot more than the original purchase price.
I made my own. It was completely different to the UK one, but still fun, and I get a lot of nice comments about it.

I use a large cloth bagfor groceries. One day a guy behind me said something to his wife about "look at the tree-hugger afraid to use paper or plastic,thinks she's saving the planet". I didn't say anything, just held the bag towards him which reads in big blue letters: Try Viagra!! (It was a freebie from a pharmaceutical rep) Everyone in line had a good laugh but he'll probably never look at a cloth bag and try to be cute about it again.
