    Default Rag quilt question

My blocks are 6.5 inches and will finish at 5 inches. The top is a mix of cotton and flannel squares and the middle and back are all flannel. Is it necessary that I do the x in the square? The cotton is a fussy cut print and I really did want the x thru the block
    Thanks Terry

I'd be concerned about how much more flannel shrinks than cotton. That may be your biggest issue. Why not do some type of stitching using the mono thread so its secure but not covering up your fussy cutting. It doesn't have to be an X, it can be echo around the design in the block or anything else

I have not stitched anything in the squares when I've used flannel for batting. Any shrinkage will create a soft/crinkled look that works well for rag quilts.

    Cheers, K

I stitched the X because it just keeps the block intact prevent any shifting when washed.

On my first rag I didn't "x" it. On the one that I just purchased fabric for I will "x" it as my blocks are 9 x 9.

I made a rag quilt using cotton on top and 2 layers of flannel. I didn't stitch an "x" in the blocks because all 3 layers is caught in the seam. I used my Accuquilt Go so I know the blocks are bigger than yours. I did prewash everything though. I bet I have washed it at least 20 times in the past 2 years as my cats seem to enjoy laying on it. I've not had any shifting at all. It is my understanding that the "x" is used when using actual batting in the quilt to keep it from shifting and bunching. You will be fine not sewing the "x" on your blocks.
