For Christmas gifts I plan to quilt some placemats. Should I use batting or just the top and lining?

It can be a matter of personal preference. The batting will make it harder if you use stemmed goblets to keep them from tipping over but if you use water glasses that shouldn't be a problem. There are also some other types of things you can use in place mats. One I've seen in quilt shops but I don't remember the name of it but it comes in packages of 4 and is cut to the shape of a placemat. You quilt directly on it. Perhaps someone else on the board has used it or know the name. There is also a material called "stiff stuff" which is good for placemats. It is a cross between an interfacing and batting. It gives the place mat substance without much puffiness and you can quilt through it. Personally I think two pieces of fabric would be too thin for my taste so I either use a low loft batting or stiff stuff in mine.

Personal preference. I like the batting. I use W&N.

I always use flannel in between the top and bottom. It does not present a problem with wine glasses but does give better protection for the table when using hot plates.

I have some soft and stable that I recieved as a gift that is sold in white or black precut for placemats. Personally, it's too expensive for me to use but it does work nicely. My husband purchased it at a lqs but here is a link for it https://www.byannie.com/shop/categor...ft-and-stable/

i have ate also used and like a double side fusible pelon that I purchased at joanns as well as a single sided fusible. I just make sure that the packaging says its machine washable.

i always use a thin layer of batt, looks professional and no problem for a wine glass.

I use what is used in quilted clothing....thermore....or something like that.....not near it now....it is a dense, but thin, lite weight batt type product....Joann's sells it....gives just enough cushion, but not unsteady. I saw that stiff stuff...how does that launder?...

I always use batting. Warm and Natural is nice and thin, plus it's very sturdy.

I've done them both ways - with and without batting. Another possibility is to use flannel instead of batting.
