Default Things I've learned on first QAYG

I've learned a lot as I've done this first QAYG
1. I definitely will do it again
2. Wish all my UFOs were still in sections
3. I will do sashing as part of each block or section instead of afterwards
4. I will cut back sashing wider so can do SID from the front on the joining.
5. Will consider doing (piano key for sure) border with each section instead of as long strip after everything else done. Of course would have to decide ahead of time that I was doing a border in that case!

I have not done one of these for a long time. What method did you use?

I cut my sandwich a couple inches larger than each block. Quilted each block. Added sashing front and back. Trimmed to 1" from seams as sashing cut at 2-1/2". Top stitched second edge of back sashing from back side (not happy with how it looks on front since apparently I can't make front and back match up as accurately as I wish). Getting ready to sew strips of blocks together. Then add border. Nearly done!

Sounds good to me. Do you add the sashing on all four sides or do you still join rows with one long strip of sashing? It does make sense to add the same width sashing on front and back and quilt that as you join blocks. Thanks. Has me thinking. What is the smallest finished width sashing you think you can join without too much difficulty?

If you try a sample to see how wide a strip needs to be you can fold in half sew to back of block bring up to front and top stitch blocks together. Look in tutorial section of this board for QAYG by Ditter, or something like that. You will see what I'm talking about. She has measurements and just see what size works for you. I made one like hers and it turned out great. I plan to do more.

I just did a search, name of the tutorial is Ditter's String Quilt.

I have been quilting for over 25 years and I am STILL learning new techniques. You will NEVER stop learning.

The one I'm doing now I have the sashing separate, added between blocks in the rows/columns, then long strips between sections.

What I want to do next time is add the front sashing to top and one side of each block (two sides on final column and top and bottom on last one in each column) before sandwiching and quilting. Then do back sashing like method B in Kimberly's tutorial on this board. Think it would be quicker and look better.

I'm thinking the width of the sashing on the back needs to be about 1/4"-1/2" wider than on the front to allow SID from the front on the seam line rather than having the stitching inside the sashing.

Never done one myself, but it's definitely something that I would like to do sometime. There are so many different methods, just have to find one that I feel comfortable with. Would love to see a picture of ones others made.
