Default Cannot fill new bobbin on my T&S 648

I have the Singer T&S 648. It was humming along beautifully until it ran out of bobbin thread. When I tried to fill the bobbin, the needle is hitting a "metal ring" below where the bobbin sits. I don't know the proper name for this part of the machine. Hence, it will not fill, since this bobbin fills in the machine. Does anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong with it? I do not want to put a ton of money into this machine. It sewed a beautiful straight stitch up to this point when I was piecing my blocks. Thanks for any help or ideas.

Take a look at the another current topic, "Singer Touch and Sew" here in Vintage Machines. If you don't have a manual, you'll probably need to get one from the Singer website. Go here - http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals and type in 648. You should see two results - one is buy a manual, the other is a free PDF download.

If all else fails, find yourself a Joann's 40% off coupon and buy a Sidewinder.

Are you sure these bobbins will fit on a Sidewinder?

It's been a while since I used a Touch & Sew, so I don't remember if the needle is supposed to move during filling the bobbin. If you didn't find the free download for a manual, google "Singer 648 filling bobbin, SewUSA.com" for free info on threading and bobbin filling.

There is a specific way to wind the bobbins. You need to real the manual and follow the instructions to the letter.

I don't have a manual for the 600 series T&S machines handy, and I think our T&S 778 is slightly different.

Also check to be sure the bobbin is in perfect condition. Nicks, cracks, warps, chips...

My 648 has a broken drive gear so I'm unable to check it for you. Sorry.
Maybe you've already done this. You can take the needle plate off and turn the machine manually to see what's going on inside. Try it in bobbin winding mode and in sewing mode and see what it does. I'd also take the top and bottom covers off and check the condition of the gears. My daughter was sewing happily along when one of the gears just disintegrated. No warning, no nothing. If your gears failed, it could have thrown your timing off. that would cause your problem.

When I had a Singer a touch and Sew, there was a little lever in the bobbin area that your moved to fill the bobbin. It had a red circle on it? I got rid of my Singer touch and sew at the time because my bobbins were worn and I couldn't find a place to buy new ones. Nowadays of course you can get spare parts on the Internet. Check the little knob thing on the bobbin bottom, is it still crisp or worn looking? For a while I could wind the bobbin by lightly pressing down on the bobbin top as it rotated to keep it in place so the worn part wouldn't slip.
