Default Fidget (or Busy Hands) Quilts for Alzheimer's Patients

A friend began making small quilts (about the size of a place mat) to donate to a nursing home for AD patients. Having something to keep their hands busy seems to help keep them calm. I've made several of these little quilts using scraps or left-over blocks to donate to the nursing home where my mom was before her death from AD and cancer. To make the quilts more interesting, I've added loops of ribbon, lace, a sewn-in key, sewn-in beads and other found objects. I try to make sure that all hard or small objects are sewn into the quilt so that they don't come loose or harm frail fingers. I really wish I had known about this before my mom passed. She would have loved one!

Thanks for suggesting a placemat as a size. I have seen several articles on this topic and thought it was a good idea, however, I didn't want to commit to a larger quilt. I think this is vey "doable."

Lovely. I made one for my mother before she passed. She was a quilter and she thought she was making it. It gave her so much pleasure. I can still see her folding it and "blocking" it and playing with the tabs.

Good for you and I know it will be enjoyed. The care facility that I made ones for requested they fit the 24" and/or the 36" tables. Making them about 12" wide and then stitching elastic into the seams so they could be stretched over the ends of the tables. Some of the residents would sit for hours at the table opening the buttons, zippers, etc.
