I was a home dec sewer before I became a quilter, and I made lots of duvet covers for customers. Read the selvege, it may say "Dry Cleaning Recommended". If this is the case, and if you wash it first, which I would agree with absolutely, you will definitely find it shrinking a lot, and the colors may change a bit. But most times the nice shiny finish will be lost. My suggestion would be to wash a piece of it first, treating it the same way you would if it was a quilt. See how you like the outcome before you go to all that trouble.

Here's a link I bookmarked for a large print fabric I didn't want to cut up. I think it would be very pretty with your fabric. If you have enough fabric, you could use it as the backing.

Stick to your guns, do not cut that fabric up, it is too beautiful to dissect it. The three panel solution is perfect and just think how much fun it will be to quilt around those large motifs.

I would make a Stack 'n' Whack out of it and if you have enough also put it on the back.

Tartan has a wonderful idea. I would use that.

I bought a book titled "Just Can't Cut It!" by Pamela Mostek specifically for a gorgeous fabric I'd found that I wanted to keep largely intact. If you can find a copy (try your library, or her website) it has some good ideas. I really like the framed center panel and scalloped edge.
