Default ugh!!

THOSE PLASTIC GEARS IN THE TOUCH N SEW!

How dare they act their age and break teeth! How. Dare. They.

A few of you kind people warned me and I thought, "aren't I lucky, it seems I've nothing to worry about". I've ordered the off-market metal new ones.

Terry is the go-to guy for these machines. His repair guides are great.

Thanks, Cari. That will be helpful.

I thought I had done a better look over...I must have missed a fair bit by not closely examining those gears. I have to admit that at $5 dollars and sinking $19 into new gears I don't feel that bad.

I feel your pain.
I have a 648 whose top gear just disintegrated while my daughter was sewing one day. I have good intentions of fixing it some day but haven't made it a priority yet. In spite of that I still like them.
Nylon parts failing isn't uncommon for any brand of machine that age. One of the reasons old all metal machines are so loved by many. 600 and 603 Touch & Sews are all metal inside.

You're not the only one: I think quite a few of us have suffered from the nylon gear. You're right, $24 is pretty good and since they usually last 40 or 50 years, it's money well spent. The thing I can't get over with my daughter's machine (Singer 498K) is that the buttonhole feature won't work because the plastic mechanism is worn and can't be fixed (at position 3 it should do a reverse ZZ)

Really?? I have a 603 that came with the desk I bought for my 404. It is still sitting right where I dropped when it came into the house. I've heard so many bad things about the T&T I've never even turned it on.
I might have to think about unearthing it I've kept thinking someone would come along and need a machine...

Could it be replicated in metal?

Probably but I'm not that fussed about it. When she gets to that stage (if ever) I'll just give her a buttonholer :-)

I had to laugh. The digest shows "curse word" by beautiful sound. Isn't that ironic? Gave me the first chuckle of the morning.

Looks like Patrice edited the title. The feeling is still there though.
