I bought a fabric from Hoffman called "Party On Confetti" with a black background:

For what I want to do, I need some solid black to go with it, but when I held it up to the black I have on hand (probably Kona), it didn't really match. I'm wondering if the Confetti background black would match Hoffman's solid black, or if it's just as much a toss-up as it matching any other brand of black solid. I've emailed Hoffman but haven't heard back yet.
Anyone else have any luck matching background color to solid color in fabrics that aren't already coordinated in the same line? Thanks!

Sorry to tell you but even trying to match Kona blacks are very hard. You really need to go to your LQS that carries a lots of different solid fabrics and see if you can find something to match.

I just had a similar problem with black fabric. After auditioning all of my black fabric, and the black fabric at two stores, I asked my sister if she had any "dull black fabric." She said she had about 9 dull blacks, but none of them really was perfect. So I just picked one that was close to what I wanted, as I thought all of hers were closer than mine were.
However, it turned out that I wanted some black for an inner border too, and I had used all she had. I finally just sort of closed my eyes and choose a black from my stash. And, you know what, in the final quilt it doesn't even look any different than the fabric I got from my sister. So my quilt ended up with two different blacks and the black background in my focus fabric. And in the final quilt, they all looked good together.
Now... I think that I stressed too much over the blacks matching. They didn't have to match. They just had to "sort of match." See the picture of my quilt....if I hadn't told you the blacks were different, would you have known? (I think the lights plays differently on black depending on what room I am in... and, now that I think about it, I bet they photograph differently too...)

You will have to take your "Party On Confetti" to a fabric shop and hold it up against the solid blacks. When you get there you will see that the black fabrics side-by-side in the store will have many different undertones such as brown, blue, black, and red. You will see this distinctly when they are beside each other in the store. There you will be able to pick the one that matches your confetti fabric.

Well, Jan, you are right. When I searched earlier, I didn't go far enough and what came up in my search was actually Hoffman batik watercolor solids, which is not at all what I'm looking for. I think I will have to do what Dina did, just look for something close. I'll be okay with that, I just wanted to rule out the perfect fabric just sitting there waiting for me before I started searching everywhere…
Thanks!
Thanks!
