Mayonnaise is just that, mayonnaise. Miracle Whip is a salad dressing, says so right on the label. And I like both of them depending on what the rest of the recipe calls for. I would think if it called for a salad dressing and didn't mention, Ranch, Italian, French, Russian, etc, they meant Miracle Whip.
I remember my aunt 'making' salad dressing with mayo, but she added mustard, sugar, pickle juice and more. It turned out to taste like Miracle Whip. So maybe when it came on the market, was a short cut for plain mayo.

It means Miracle Whip or something similar. In fact, I can remember a jar in my grandparents fridge that actually had salad dressing written on the label, in the same way you would see mayonaise written on a label. A southern person probably wrote the recipe.

Mom always had Miracle Whip. We use Hellman's but the other day I had a salad and mixed a table spoon of XVOO a little balsamic and parmesan and minced onion. We got some T-bones on sale. Cut the tenderloin part off for me, sliced thin put it on top of my salad. Was pretty good. I have mixed strawberries in with the balsamic and EVOO, teeny bit of honey on chicken sliced on top of salad. Tasty.
