I couldn't see the point of collecting dangerous items to keep them out of the landfill, then dumping in a bunch at once, so I take all my used pins and blades to the pharmacy for safe sharps disposal.

I agree. The cheese container is a great idea. Also, if you have an empty tin from a hand or foot cream/ointment, like Burt's Bees Hand Salve, Bag Balm, or Working Hands.

I use an empty plastic water bottle for my used needles. It looks like you could put blades in that as well by cutting an opening below the narrow part of the bottle.
