Default Float Function on Juki DX7

    Hi, All,

I currently own a Juki Exceed F400 and am thinking of upgrading to the DX7. The DX7 is advertised as having a "float function" that may help to reduce puckers when using a walking foot for quilting.

Are there any DX7 owners out there who have opinions about the float function? If it really does help with the reduction of puckers, I'm nearly sold.....

    Best,
    A

I don't have that machine, but from what I read I think the float function is for free motion quilting, not the walking foot. My Husqvarna has this - instead of hopping, the free motion foot hovers just above the fabric. I really like it; my free motion quilting improved significantly when I started using this feature. If you've read how Leah Day modifies her free motion feet, her goal is to get it to work like this.

Personally, I will never buy a machine for quilting without this feature again - I like it that much. If you generally quilt with a walking foot instead of free motion, though, it won't be of any value to you.

I checked online, and it shows the float function being used with a regular presser foot. You might want to call a dealer to find out if it can be used with a walking foot. My thinking is that it may not work with a walking foot.

I have the DX7, and use the float function setting with my walking foot when binding my quilts. The setting range is from 0.0 to 2.5 mm. Default setting is 0.5 mm. I usually increase to 1.5 to 2.0 when sewing binding. After turning the binding, I secure it by machine. Works very well for me. I don't do much actual quilting with a walking foot, but I imagine the float function would work just as well for that.

I quilt on my TL2010Q, but always switch to the DX7 for the binding.
