I was just dropping off my fair entries and was talking to the ladies there. I suggested that they offer a category for a machine quilted baby quilt next year. They were enthusiastic and asked what size (minimum outside dimension in inches) I would suggest.

As an example, if it was 36x54, which is what I usually aim for, it would be 180".

I told them I'd ask the experts and get back to them, so here I am. Suggestions?

I think that sounds reasonable. I oversized baby quilts but usually go about 40 X 50

I like the 40X50 size.

I make mine about 42" by 42" - 45". All of mine are donated though, but I wouldn't do less than 42" wide ever.

I always made mine selvage to selvage and a yard and half long. Made things simple that way, and no one ever complained about it. Been making them since 1972 for gifts. Lost count how many I made in Harlem School District, Rockford Ill., Corpus Christi, Tx., School District and a few other places along life's highway.

I usually do the fabric width and about 54 (1 1/2 yds) long

So far, 180" outside sounds reasonable. This is a minimum size, people can go over of course.

I would go with no bigger then your size. I hate it when people try to squeeze in a twin size in the baby quilt category. I know picky picky.

It doesn't really matter what size, so long as they are specific and clear!!!
Also, any other requirements stated that they may want.
(and then that they follow through on them when judged!!!)

My preference is to see min/max dimensions given, as otherwise, someone is going to put a bed quilt or lap quilt in and say, well, it is for a baby and the baby can keep using it for the rest of its life! ...... and you have to let it be! Likewise a miniature quilt could be entered, and have the same argument, as it could be for a preemie .... which could be true, and allow for a very tiny quilt.

The Fair can easily compare notes with what other local fairs are using ... or others further away. Or what the provincial association is recommending as they have been really trying to standardize across the province in recent years.

Having entered at several different fairs over the years, I definitely prefer perimeter sizing.

It is very definitive. Yes, you can be eliminated if you are that one inch short/over to the requirement. But that is easier to accept .... than when it says must be 30"x40" .... and your quilt just happens to be out one inch on the length or width, yet the total perimeter would fit. It has happened to me ..... and when I asked, I just got a blank stare!!! Many of the fairs do have several classes, so that if you can't get your quilt into one, then you could get it into another class, even if not specific to crib quilts. I have done that where an offbeat type ends up competing with traditionals and such .......... and won! Much to some folks chagrin!! but 'dems the rules!

Then in contrast ..... one time, I entered a baby quilt in the baby quilt class, being sure it fit the maximum size.
Guess who won? ...... someone who had a quilt larger than the max! ggrrrr!!!!
Me-thinks that the judges/convenors didn't know the difference between min and max ..... or no one even read the rules!!!!!

Oh the joys of showing at our Fairs!!!!!!

But it does have its rewards!!
