Default Gents’ Neckties

I have just set to making a memory cushion from silk neckties - not a very seasonal thing to be doing I know, but I wanted to get this project started.

As I want to make blocks from the ties I had to unpick the stitches. Boy, was I impressed at the complex construction of such a simple item!

I had not realised that the seam on a tie is hand stitched or at least that’s what it appeared to be. These stitches not only held the outer fabric edges together but also anchored the back of the tie to an inner interfacing. The contrasting lining at both end of the tie was also more complex that I first imagined.

So, if you are giving a necktie to someone this Christmas, remember there’s more to a tie than you would think!

Ties are also all cut all on the bias so if you are looking for a quick bias trim, you can use the tie fabric.

I made a quilt out of ties, it's labor intensive like t shirt quilts. A pillow is the right scale and should be easy to handle. Most tie fabrics require use of a stabilizer on the back. Mine were mostly a polyester blend.
