I hope someone out there can understand what I'm about to describe and with any luck provide ideas as to what I am doing wrong. I recently purchased a Janome 1600 P QC. I have it set up on a Little Gracie II frame and after quilting a 60 x 70 quilt, I had varying degrees of tension problems. So, I did some research on that and found some interesting ideas which have now been put to use. I just finished a practice run on my next "victim", the upper thread tension seems to be good but the bobbin thread is not laying right. This is where I hope I can explain it: I don't have loops per-say but there is obvious looseness. Would this be indicative of the bobbin case being too loose? I sure hope this makes sense. If the loops are on the back, that means the tension on the top is too loose.

The "loops" are not the upper thread, the bobbin thread is laying loosely on the fabric. Would that still be upper tension being too loose?

yes, the top thread is not tight enough to pull the bobbin thread through to the middle of the quilt sandwich

Agree with previous replies.

As a rule of thumb, issues with thread on the top of the quilt are bobbin thread.
Issues with thread on the bottom of the quilt are with the top thread.

i have that same machine and when i bought it they set all the dial are set on 3. there are three places you can see
numbers and they are all set at 3 and they told me i should use so fine # 50 thread. so i bought some of that
and it is the only thread i use on it. when i quilt i take out the feed dogs. i actually just keep the feed dogs out. that is
all i use the machine for

Thanks Joset. I did finally get all the components to play nice and spent the day today quilting a small quilt. I have never used the so fine brand, do you use the poly or cotton?
