Default 201 or 15?

A seller 50 miles away has this machine. I think it's a 15, so I wouldn't be interested, but if it's a 201, I might want it. Please help me identify. He won't get me the serial # because the machine is in storage. Thank you.

The machine looks like a 15-91, I have one. Too bad you can't get the serial number. I also have a 201 and it is a nice machine but I do all my free motion quilting on the 15-91. Good luck on whatever you decide. Joan

Also, a 201 has a white light switch on the far right hand side at the bottom where the plugs all plug together (straight under the bobbin winder). It's the only one that has that. So, when you see that little white switch, it's a 201. Once you see it once, you can always tell it's a 201 on Craigslist or offerup or any of those sites, even with bad photos.

Here's the 201-2 I gifted to DH's DIL.

The 201-2 is quieter and smoother than the 15-91. It's often said that the 15-91 is the Cadillac of Singer Vintage Machines. They say the 201-2 is the Rolls-Royce. I have both. There is just something special about a 201-2. I learned to sew on a 15-91, making doll clothes. Mother just let me have a go at it. That's one of the 15-91s that I have now.

They are both great machines.

Thank you. That's what I suspected, but had nothing to go on. It's only $35, but I will let it go.

It looks like a 15 is easier to set up for free motion, but I know a few who use a 201 for embroidery as well as quilting, but still; the CB hook and bobbin case on 15s probably have some advantages. I don't think we should fault them in any way. It's a quiet nice running machine when serviced, almost nothing is as quiet as cleaned and oiled 201. If you look for a 201 in particular, (for feature like the drop in bobbin case, etc.) wait for a 201, but if someone is looking for a sturdy straight stitcher I don't think a 15 will let anybody down. The 15-91 in the picture can drop the feed dogs the same way a 201 can.
