Default Missouri Star Quilt as You Go Hex quilt. ????

Isn't this the same as Hickory Hill Hickory Nut? A poster here, Eddie, did a tutorial on using the exact same thing some years ago. I have all three sizes of the Hickory Nut and I can't tell any difference from the look of it. The Hickory Hill templates all say they are patented and Hickory Hill Quilt shop says they are the only ones who can sell it when I bought mine. The demo how to make is the very same.

They look the same to me. I have the Hickory Nut one too. Wonder how it got passed the patent? I use it a lot for small quilt as you go projects. I like the new ways MS used the fabric to make different designs. Great bargain on the set today. I had enough quilter's cash to get it free so I had to buy it. LOL If there is any difference in the two versions I'll post a picture.

No one can "patent" a hexagon shape. (or any other shape, square, circle, triangle etc)

Or you can go back even further and dig out your Kaye Wood's View & Do Hexagons and make a slightly different size.

It’s from Great Britain so maybe the US patent doesn’t apply.

The patent number is right on the hexagon template.

Edit: Yep, it's patented. If it were ever argued in court, though, they would lose. I'm shocked that it was accepted.

Looked it up. It's actually the design of the template that is patented. There may be something about the Missouri Star one that makes it different.

patents only last so long too. Governments give others the chance at making a "better one" after a year I believe. maybe only on some things, don't know. only that patents are for awhile, not forever.

DH told me a co worker had a tricycle design patented when he changed the foot pedals to hand pedals even though there were others like it. No one thought to patent the design so he did. Now he gets paid when the design is used.
