Default Need advice on t-shirt quilt

I am making a first t-shirt quilt. Bought stabilizer. What have you used on the back of a t-shirt quilt? I considered a pieced back of more t-shirts. I also considered a quilt as you go approach. Any suggestions or forewarnings from your experience?

On my last tshirt quilt, I made the backing out of leftover t shrits (the sleeve emblems and shirt duplicate fronts that I had) and combined it with my left over sashing and other coordinating fabrics. I personally hate buying fabric for the back of a quilt (unless I make a true two-sided quilt), so my backs are randomly pieced together.

PS. it will feel very heavy if you use tshirts on the back and front together.

T-shirt quilt steps
I made a tutorial for t shirt quilts that I make. I have used fabric with batting and minky fabric without batting for the backing.

I finished t-shirt quilts for 3 grandkids last year. I think pieced t-shirt backing would be difficult to keep aligned. Once finished I had them long armed by someone who knows what she is doing. There is a lot of sentiment in each quilt. I like to use sashing to frame the shirts.

I used no pill good quality fleece. Easy to do as I machine quilt my own quilts and it is the perfect weight - no batting in, just T-shirts and fleece backing.

I like this idea alot. My niece wants a t-shirt quilt (actually I think some of them are sweatshirts). I was thinking batting and a sheet for backing...but the basic fleece sounds like an easy solution!

She wants to take it to college...but when I think of dorm rooms, I think of them being warm. Do you really need a heavy quilt in a dorm room?
