This happens a lot especially with the wide hole plate for zig zag stitches. If you can get a single needle hole plate it would probably stop the eating of the fabric. Also using a leader fabric will stop it. Another way is start sewing with fabric ends out of the back of the foot and reverse stitch then stitch normal.
