Vintage Sunbonnet Sue blocks from flour sacks
I was gifted some Sunbonnet Sue blocks my grandmother had appliquéd in the 1930s from flour sack prints. The background of the appliqués were also from flour or feed sacks. Turns out my grandmother (born about 1910) didn’t really like quilt making much, so the needle turned buttonhole stitched blocks languished. My sister wanted me to make a baby quilt for my soon to arrive great niece, but after discussion with folks on the main forum, I decided these were not appropriate for a baby quilt that needed to be robust and very washable. I will be mailing it to my sister when I get the hanging rod holder on it tomorrow.
Note the prints truly are from old flour sacks though she bought the solids for the little girl hats. One of the backgrounds even have a very slight amount of printing left on it. I am normally a much more modern quilter, but I went old school on this with only outline quilting around the Sues and straight line quilting in the borders.
