Default A cut/slit in my quilt!

Hello Quilters! As some may remember, this is my second Play Ball quilt. This one was made larger for my great grandson’s bed. I was into my meander quilting, when to my horror I came upon a slit or cut about 1/2 inch. I panicked! I stitched like you do darning back & forth like I could erase it, which in hindsight stuck out like a sore thumb. I continued quilting.
After I had it finished and bound I laid it on my floor. My eye was instantly drawn to the darning spot like a magnet would draw metal. I hated it. So then a thought occurred to me for a better solution.
I cut a small circle with my pinking shears, of the same fabric that was in the damaged square. I hand sewed a gathering stitch about 1/4 inch away from the outer edge. I cut a cardboard to go inside the gather and drew my stitches up around the cardboard circle, like you would a YoYo. I pressed with starch as flat as I could, then removed my cardboard.
I then took tiny hand stitches to apply it over the hole only AFTER removing all the darning stitches. I didn’t want to leave them bc they also showed on the backing. I took it then to my longarm and connected the meandering quilting stitches , stitching over the circle patch.
This was the best solution I could think to do. If you’re had a similar experience, please share. If not, I hope this might help someone that may find their self in a similar dilemma. I am more pleased now than with the panicked darning.
The square is the neon green above the basketball. The last 2 pictures are the hole before the fix and the whole quilt with darning.

You did fabulous camouflaging the cut. I had left a basting
pin in a quilt once. Had to cut a slit in backing to get it out. I made a little heart to appliqué over the hole. My sister thought it was cute ☺️

Great save!!! You are not alone as I've been know to accidentally cut a hole into the fabric. When I teach quilting, i say that there are no mistakes in quilting. Just a little adjustment with the fabric.

I did a hand darning on a quilt that had a small tear in it. It was a hand quilted quilt - and could be found only if looking really hard for it and know where to look. It was "mended" - but not very noticeable.

Can't see where you did the fix - but you were right - the darned spot was conspicuous.

I have done exactly the same thing--on the first quilt I ever quilted on my DSM. It was a flannel baby panel for my first DGD. The panel had a bunch of animals hanging around a palm tree and a blue border with multi coloured polkadots. I found some flannel that was pretty close in colour to some of the polkadots and appliqued one over the cut as well as a bunch more in random spots. No one ever knew and it held up well over multiple washings.

Your fix is next to invisible. And quilt is beautiful!!

You should be so proud of yourself. I had to hunt hard to find the repair.

I had a hole in one of the puppy paws on my Patriotic Puppies quilt. I appliqued a star inside and said "That puppy stepped on a star!"

Great save! It is almost invisible up close. Can't find it on the finished quilt. Love the finished quilt.

Thank you Toogie for the details of how you fixed the slit in your quilt. You did an amazing job! Very smart solution. Your GGS will love it!
