I have been watching LOTS of videos on making tote bags and some use 1/8" double-sided adhesive tape to hold down zippers before sewing. This looks like such a big help as you can line up much better than pinning without worrying about things shifting as you sew.

But which brand? There are many of them online and some say don't sew thru and some say can wash/washes out/don't wash - I'm so befuddled about this silly little tape!

If you have used this what is your opinion? Which brand works best? Thoughts on using vs not using?

Little things can be so confusing sometimes . . .

I have tried several brands of basting tape and haven't found one yet that will hold long enough to sew anything.. I end up using glue. Maybe someone here will post a brand they use and like.

The only one I bought is By Annie's. I got it specifically for using with clear vinyl pouches. Like all By Annie's products, at least in my experience, it's a great product.

For bags or other places when I'm using cotton, if I want an adhesive baste, I use a ScraPerfect Glue Tip (large) on a bottle of Elmer's School Glue, or if you can't find those, a FineLine Glue Tip, which also fits the Elmer's bottles. https://www.amazon.com/Fineline-Gaug...s%2C139&sr=8-2

I’ve been using Dritz water soluble tape for bag making just because it’s been easy to find. From my experience it stays sticky if you store in a zip lock bag when not using. It’s not something you can tape baste then decide to sew it tomorrow as it will dry out (trust me on that). I think Jessica from OklaRoots uses the By Annie tape. I’ve not tried it myself. You definitely want a water-soluble tape to avoid a sticky needle.
I’ve never used glue, I’m too impatient for that. I think it would fine for a flat zipper such as a zipper pocket inside a bag. Not sure how it would work for something like the zipper pockets in the Necessary Clutch Wallet. I would be concerned about a sticky needle if it wasn’t completely set (my impatience).
I pretty much only use tape for zippers and little fiddly pieces. I find it much easier to use than clips or pins.

I bought a package of Quilter's Select tape at quilt shop today. I have never been disappointed in any of QS products. I'll try it out on binding.

I have some but I haven't tried it out yet. I've only used the washable before on garments for zippers and other things. I haven't had trouble with any of those holding until I've stitched but as I said, I've only used them on garments. I second keeping it in a ziiploc. Especially if you live in a humid climate.

Thank you Everyone, this is very helpful! I was curious about whether the water-soluble would be a better choice in case I had to wash the bag. And I probably wouldn't have even thought of keeping the tape in a Ziploc to keep it from drying out.

For me, it's more to keep it from dissolving with the humidity! It sounds weird but it happens. I don't know if it would make any difference if you had to wash the bag. The water soluble is mostly important for clothing where you don't want the extra bulk of having the tape remain in the seam
