Patterns in Magazines
#1
Has anyone here ever had a pattern published in a magazine? I have not had the opportunity, but as someone who does doodle out a bunch of quilt designs and sometimes writes the instructions for so I can make them, it's a question that has crossed my mind. Like, if you have a pattern published in a magazine, does the magazine then own the pattern or does the designer? Are they allowed to sell the pattern elsewhere? And how does the process even work?
Really, I'm just curious how the magazines get the patterns in them and the process. These are thoughts that cross my mind while doing mindless work at work

I think Quiltmaker owns the patterns Bonnie Hunter publishes with them, they aren't on her website and if she refers to them with a note of what issue they were in.
I haven't subscribed to magazines since 1998, but I've picked up a few at estate sales. What jumps out at me is the idea that fabric lines have a relationship with magazines and that dictates what fabrics you see. there is usually a full page ad for the line used in the patterns somewhere in the mag.
I expect designers have the same kind of co-relationship. I don't see creativity now, I see marketing to sell ever more fabric and the dream you too can make this quilt and be famous and thin and beautiful and rich
No fat shaming.... just sayin'
