Last week I started digging in my scraps for 1 1/2 inch pieces to use up...it took me almost 5 days to trim enough for what I hope to be a toddler quilt, and I'm still sewing these small strips together! I really have a ton of scrap strips in the 1 1/2" and 2 1/2" that need to be used up before buying more fabric. Guessing it will take almost all fall and into the winter before using them up. Do you have a favorite scrap quilt? Can you share a link with me to your favorite pattern?

For that sort of strip, I like log cabins. So many variations and ways to set them, just divide scraps into light/dark or color groups.

I also like log cabins and have made many of them. But there's no way I could ever use up all the scraps.

I really like log cabins too. A new layout for me, was starting with a light/dark HST and then adding strips to make a 1/4 log cabin block. it looks really neat and I found it to be faster than the traditional.

Another one I really like is a great leader and ender. Sew a light and a dark 2 1/2 inch square together. then add a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangle. Make 4 sets, being sure to keep the orientation the same. Then sew the sets together, keeping the light squares on the corners. The pic is 4 blocks put together with a narrow sashing and cornerstone. Not necessary but it meant I didn't have to match seams and my eyes stopped going squirrelly This pattern looks very intricate when set on point.

I probably have a bajillion more but these two came to mind . Scrap quilts are my favourite because I get bogged down matching colours.

I'll never use all my scraps either. I've made a string quilt variation called String Me Along, a 2 1/2" square project that doesn't have a name that I know of. I made it from a photo, and now I'm working on the Connected Stars pattern for a quilt that I think will be a new bed quilt and I still have boxes of squares and triangles and a lot of uncut scraps.

I recently made this St Louis 16 patch that was fun and quick and used a lot of my 2 1/2” strips. You only need 1 light strip and 1 dark strip that is 22” long. I found it easier to sew and iron the strips if I cut them into two pieces 11” long. I did mine similar to the one found on The Last Homely House YouTube site.

I used red and neutral strips to make this strip pieced quilt. This is my first scrap quilt and probably my last.

I almost always work with scraps but I find it more restful and satisfying if there is some sort of connection. Often, just using a consistent block can give this but I prefer coming up with some sort of colour scheme as well. All of these quilts were made from scraps and most of those scraps were in the format you're playing with. :-)

I'm currently working on a sort of colourblock approach - nothing much to show right now because it's just a mess of exploded scrap boxes but I'm hoping those boxes will close once I've used up some of the fabric. :-)

Gemm, I'm intrigued by the fourth picture over, the diagonal strips that looks like they are 2.5 wide then they are all on point. Did you sew 2.5 strips together then cut into triangles? I think this might be my next scrap quilt!

Stumbled on this when I was "playing" aka wasting time on the computer last night!

Based on the simplicity of a rail fence block, using pieces 3"x8"
... so would work up into a quilt pretty darned quick!
