I found this in a mystery I'm reading. The book is The Seventh Witch by Shirley Damsgaard, one in a series where the detective and her grandmother are witches and have supernatural powers.

"When I'd commented on my sound sleep, ... Abby informed me that my quilt could be thanked for my restful night. The bold blue and yellow rosettes pieced together with muslin, now aged to a pale ivory, were really hex signs. The rosette was the sign for good luck ... blue the color of protection, and yellow the color of health."

I don't think the rest of the book has anything to do with quilting, but it made me curious. Has anyone heard of this, of magical or supernatural meanings assigned to designs or colors? Do you know of any other references to it?

I've never heard of anything like that before. Interesting.

Seems like different people assign different colors to the same meanings. There's a lady down the road who has purple bowling balls mounted on pedestals in front of her house "for protection" (not sure from what...lol)

I read an article about Indians signs, symbols and the colors each had a special meaning to them. That was several years ago though, can't remember where I read it.

This is going to depend on what you believe. Although I was raised Roman Catholic, I have a very unique belief system that involves a mixture of several different religions and faiths.

Some people believe that colors have meanings and depending on which colors you focus on in your quilt, that could be the result of the effect from using that quilt.

Prayer is a very powerful thing. I have been told that if you have a special intention while making a quilt - perhaps to keep the future owner safe or to provide good health - if you focus on it strongly though all stages of development that the quilt could have "magical" powers.

I forget where but I read once that when making a sampler for someone there were certain blocks you did not want to include because of the association of bad vibes.

Here is a website that helps explain colors a little better.

Here is a website I found on folk lore and quilt history.

Hope these helped in your search :-)

Wiccans have meanings for the colors of candles they use in their spells.

Just this weekend I heard that using cobalt blue in your garden will help protect your house from bad spirits. :D

Colors can effect moods some are soothing and some are invigorating.

But I know for a fact if your building a car to sell paint it RED!!

They do not call it Resale Red for nothing........just watch the prices at a Barrett Jackson auction!

That's hilarious. Bowling balls, for real? If they weren't bowling balls, they'd sound like gazing balls, which I've seen in dark colors. They're put on pedestals.
