Is there anything you can do with a basic 9 patch besides make it a disappearing 9 patch?

There are many quilt patterns that "start" with a 9 patch. One of my favorites is 6" 9 patch blocks with a triple sashing (3 one inch strips) and a small 3" 9 patch for cornerstones. I've made this in scrappy purples, scrappy teals and I'm making another in scrappy greens. It's a good way to use up my scrap squares and strips! Also, 9-patch blocks look great alternated with other blocks, either a square cut from one fabric or another pieced block like a star block or something.

Pair the block with a snowball block and you have a great easy quilt.

You can pair them with rail fence too. Makes a woven look.

try putting the nine patch on point and see if it doesn't turn a plain block into an intriguing puzzle! <wave>

Cut the nine patch on the diagonal and mix them up.

I made a 9 patch with sashing as a sudoku quilt once for a friend who is into those puzzles - didn't tell her what it was but hid the word 'sudoku' in the quilting. She finally worked it out after lots of hints from me! LOL

Here's the link if you want to see http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-27464-1.htm
