I have a Bernia, that has a wonderful serpentine stitch that works great for machine sewing binding... Mostly I use it for charity quilts, but it really is pretty enough to use on any quilt.... for those of you without a Bernina it is a wavy zig-zag... I am sure other machines have a similar stitch.
