The first one should be; six of one, half dozen of the other. It means one choice is about the same as the other choice.

This one came about when you actually bought donuts from a baker. If he knew you and your family (as our baker did) you'd order a dozen donuts and he'd give you an extra just to be nice. This often happened to me and if I was really lucky I'd get a jelly donut. YUM! Those are still the best tasting donuts I've ever had.

I used to tell my kids to

they always stopped what they were doing... at least long enough to look at me and say 'HUH?'
