Nope, k3n is right. If he's not awake and obviously hungry, don't wake him up!! And remember, it is normal for him to want to eat about every three hours. And for nursing babies, it isn't unusual to want to eat every two hours in the beginning. It may take several days of good nursing to kick your milk production into high gear. But if he's sleeping, he isn't hungry, so nap when you can!

I know, eh? I mean, if he's hungry, he'll tell me. If I wake him and he's not hungry, then I have to deal with getting him back to sleep and maybe he won't be very happy about having been woken up... *sigh*
Congratulations! It sounds like you are going to make a great Mom. They will definitely "tell" you when they need something. Let sleeping baby's lie. Also my best piece of advice....especially in these early weeks....when Alex sleeps....you nap, rest or just sit and have a cup of tea with your feet up.

Didn't make a peep at the hospital, but now that he's home, watch out!
I fed him around 5, gave him a bottle because he was crying hysterically. Then he was fine till 8, cried again so I went to fix him a bottle and by the time I was back all he had needed was a good burp, lol!
I hate to wake him to feed him again... at the hospital they say every 3 hours, but I gave him formula this morning, and I know that takes longer to digest, so I guess I'll just wait till he wakes up on his own.
Congratulations! The first Mother's Day is so special. You'll get to know all his different cries for different needs. No need to wake him up to feed him. When I had my babies, the indicator the doc gave to make sure they were getting enough to eat was if they were thoroughly wetting at least 6-8 diapers a day. (That was 14 years ago so double check with your pediatrician to see if that is still reliable advice). Make sure that when he sleeps, you sleep. Housework can wait -- you need your rest. Have fun and enjoy him -- he's really cute!

Mel, I"m going to give you one of the best pieces of advice I've ever received "trust your instinct" - if you think he needs to sleep, let him...YOU know best. Personally, I'd let him sleep and feed him when he gets up. He's has lots of time for schedules etc. Imagine what a shock life is for his system right now! He needs you to do everything for him, and he's smart enough to let you know it. You will soon learn to differentiate his cries so you'll know a bit more of what's going on. Feed by a clock? No thanks, is what I say.
